Can Laser Dentistry Be Used for Root Canals?

Many people avoid getting a root canal because they are scared that there will be severe pain or long recovery times. However, with the help of laser dentistry, root canals can be done much easier, which actually leads to quicker recovery times and less pain. Laser dentistry is a modern practice that more patients are considering because of the many benefits that come along with the practice. Keep reading to learn more about root canals and how they can be done through laser dentistry practices.

Laser dentistry for root canals

Outlined below is an overview of how laser dentistry can be used for root canal procedures. When needing a root canal, it is a good idea to ask a dentist about having it done with dental lasers.

Laser dentistry

Laser dentistry is a modern-day practice that more dentists are using for both cosmetic and restorative procedures. Dental laser beam lights are used for the removal or reshaping of both the hard and soft tissues within the mouth. The dental lasers act as a vaporizing or cutting instrument, which typically replaces the need for a scalpel or drill.

Aside from root canals, dentists also recommend laser dentistry for the following things:

  • Gum reshaping for cosmetic purposes
  • Oral cancer screenings
  • Lesion removal for biopsies
  • Teeth whitening to remove stains
  • Removal of infection for gum disease treatment

Laser dentistry practices have proven to be a successful practice, but it is good to know that the technology currently only removes and destroys tissue.

How it works

Patients that undergo a root canal in laser dentistry should expect the procedure to be less invasive. Just like the traditional route, laser dentistry still requires the patient to undergo anesthetic to ensure that there is no discomfort. Once numbed, the dentist will use the laser to remove the infected areas of the tooth, which includes the entire chamber and roots, hence the name "root canal." After the root canal is completed, the patient will be required to heal for a few days before a dental crown can be placed to complete the process.

When having a root canal done through laser dentistry techniques, the procedure typically does not take as long. Since the tissues are immediately destroyed and removed by the laser beam, the dentist is able to complete the process much quicker.

Benefits of laser dentistry for root canals

Laser dentistry offers benefits that traditional practices do not have. When dental lasers are used for performing root canals, patients are likely to experience the following benefits:

  • Quicker recovery time
  • Less pain
  • The procedure is less invasive
  • Healing is easier
  • The procedure is often completed quicker
  • Less sensitivity
